Case study: SigEnergy

The customer was looking for a solar and battery system on their home in Baltic Wharf, Totnes to:

  • maximise the size of the the solar panel system.
  • charge their electric car.
  • have enough storage to cover most of their energy use of around 10 kWh per day.
  • ensure power to the whole home in the event of a power cut.

Maximise the size of the the solar panel system

Installed on south and north facing roofs to maximise output.

Used high efficiency Aiko Neostar 475W solar panels which provide about 6% more energy than standard 450W solar panels.

Solar panels positioned in landscape and portrait to optimise the use of available roof space.  Installed close to the edges of the roof to increase the number of solar panels. We designed the system with extra brackets to compensate for the additional wind uplift when installed towards the edge of the roof.

SigEnergy DC EV Charger

SigEnergy has an optional bi-directional DC charger.

This means you can charge you car faster – if you have a 12kW SigEnerggy controller and 24kWh of batteries, you can charge your car at 12kW rather than the standard 7kW.

It also means you can use the car battery energy to run your home.

SigEnergy has an optional standard AC charger.

Being integrated with the SigEnergy battery gives you more control than having a 3rd party car charger such as MyEnergi Zappi.

Storage size

With a daily demand of around 10kWh of energy, a 16kWh battery was chosen with the option to upgrade to 24kWh at a later date.  An 8kW controller was selected to maximise output with 16kWh of battery capacity.  The distribution network operator allowed a relatively high 8kW of export.

SigEnergy Backup

Adding a backup gateway allowed the home to continue running in the event of a power cut.
