Home battery with night rate tariff
Let’s have a look at how a home battery works, in this example without solar panels.
Here we’re using a cheap night rate tariff from your energy supplier.
The reason this system works is because you store cheap electricity overnight in the battery and then use the stored energy during the day, when electricity from the grid is expensive.
Daytime
So let’s start in the morning with a fully charged battery.
During the day, the battery energy is used to supply your home.
Daytime loads greater than battery maximum output
If the battery cannot supply all the house loads, for example when you have many appliances running at the same time, the grid also steps in.
Daytime with empty battery
Part way through the day, your battery might run out, so the grid takes over completely.
Night-time battery charging
At night, the battery is recharged by the grid, using cheap electricity from your energy supplier.
