Feed-in tariffs were set up by the government to encourage the uptake of solar electricity systems. They ended in 2021 due to a massive fall in solar panel prices, making solar systems more affordable.

Smart Export Guarantee

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

The government replaced feed-in tariffs with the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) which sets a minimum amount energy suppliers must pay solar producers for exporting energy back to the grid.

Example Export Tariffs

Most energy suppliers pay far more than the Smart Export Guarantee of 4.1p per kWh, with suppliers such as Octopus Energy offering up to 15p per kWh.
