Size of system
The customer wanted as large a system as possible in order to reduce the costs of running the building. The property has large electricity requirements, including an electrically heated swimming pool and heat pumps for heating the building. The size of PV system was constrained by the roof space and also Western Power Distribution requirements. To maximise the system size without compromising aesthetics, the solar panels selected are the most efficient all black panels available. This allowed us to fit a 20% larger system than using standard efficiency solar panels.
Maximise use of solar
We have designed the system to allow the retrofitting of a Tesla Powerwall solar battery system. We have also installed 3 power diverters (also known as solar immersion controllers) so unused solar energy is automatically diverted to heat the hot water for the property.
Aesthetics
The appearance of the system was a very important factor for the customer. We therefore selected a very low profile mounting system called GSE. As you can see from the image, the solar panels are nearly flush with the slates. We also used black anodised GSE top and side flashings to improve the overall appearance. The panels have been designed with aesthetics in mind; thinner wires that appear all black at a distance (standard panels have thick solder lines that can cause a degree of reflection).
Shading
Due to shading on the site, we used SolarEdge inverters to limit the impact of shading on the solar panels. Normally, shade on one panel impacts the entire solar system. With SolarEdge the shade only impacts the panels which are shaded.
